The media has given a snazzy new name to some pretty old driving techniques, however they apply just as much today as when they were first thought of. Hypermiling is a set of rules and guidelines that will help you get the most fuel mileage out of your car. Take a look at the suggestions below and we'll make you a hypermiler!

Drive less. This may seem to simplistic, but if you carpool, ride your bike, or walk, you'll save 100% of your gass

Drive half way, then bike in. If you live in an area where you can't reach work, or biking isn't safe, try driving half way, then riding your bike the rest of the way.

Get the junk out of your trunk. Most people carry alot of extra items in their car that can often add up to 100+ pounds. Try cleaning out your car and lightening your load.

Let the gas saver drive. If there are several people in the car, let the most fuel efficient person drive. You may save money by keeping the guy with the lead foot from being behind the wheel.

Inflate your tires. Under (or over) inflated tires will often greatly reduce gas mileage. Make sure that your tires are inflated properly.

Take off that roof rack. If you have addons on your car that you don't use, like a roof rack then take them off. You'll save on the wind resistance.

Once you've implemented these driving styles, it's nice to see a return on your investment. If you don't have a factory MPG gauge, try one of our aftermarket ScanGauge MPG gauges.

One of the easiest things you can do to increase your fuel mileage is to correct some bad driving habits. People often forget that while the type of car you drive is important, the way you drive it can have just as much impact. Here are some bad habits that cause people to lose fuel economy

Driving short trips - If you are making a quick trip down the street, consider just taking a stroll there instead. Don't forget your trusty bicycle either - either one is completely free, and will even make you feel better! Most Americans forget that walking is a great form of transportation, and can help keep us in shape.

Roaring away from green lights - Mashing the pedal to the floor when pulling away from a green light wastes gasoline faster than you'd guess. Unless it's the 1950's, and you're trying to impress your girlfriend, leave the racing for the track.

Racing up to red lights - If you see a red light ahead of you, instead of powering up to it and slamming on the brakes, try just letting off the gas, and coasting all the way up to the light. This gradual deceleration will use less gas (since you are just coasting), and give the read light time to turn green. If it turns green before you reach the light, then you'll get a rolling start, instead of coming to a standstill.

Trying to brake the sound barrier on the highway - Driving faster than the posted speed limit on the highway is not only dangerous, but it will actually cost you a significant amount of fuel. In tests by Consumer Reports, driving at 75 miles per hour instead of 65 miles per hour reduced fuel economy by between 3 and 5 miles per gallon, depending on the vehicle. So slow down and save some money!
